IMS Clients

The IMS clients listed below are all freely available to download. More importantly, they are all compatible with the the Fokus Open IMS Core - the open source, standards based IMS core software.

UCT IMS Client

The UCT IMS Client is designed to be used in conjunction with the Fraunhofer FOKUS Open IMS Core . The client has been developed by the Communications Research Group at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. At present the client is still in active development and there are many known bugs.

The client supports AKA authentication, and tries to emulate IMS signaling as far as possible. The current version supports voice calls (using the μ-law codec), video calls, pager-mode instant messaging, XCAP, IPTV functionality and presence.

IMS Communicator

The IMS-Communicator is based on the old version of the SIP-Communicator softphone project. It is built on top of the JAIN-SIP RI, in which contributions were also made to support the IMS SIP extensions defined by 3GPP and IETF. The IMS-Communicator media stack is provided by the Java Media Framework (JMF) API. Despite being written in Java and accomplishing multiplatform compliance, there are no plans for porting IMS-Communicator to the J2ME CDC environment.

IMS-Communicator was originally developed by PT Inovaçao to support the development and testing of IMS/NGN components for its shipnet® (Service Handling on IP Networks) IMS/NGN architecture.

IMS-Communicator is now open to the community as an open-source project, licensed with the Apache Software License and the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
