Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)

A detailed definition of an ESB can be found on the wikipedia. An ESB is essentially the backbone of a SOA-based enterprise network - although it does not implement a SOA, but provides the features with which one may be implemented. The ESB itself is the piece of software that lies between the business applications and enables communication among them. In the context of an IMS/NGN framework, and ESB would help to enable smoother integration with northbound OSS/BSS systems and an SOA-based SDP. A number of open-source implementations are available:

  • Apache ServiceMix is an Open Source ESB that combines the functionality of a SOA and an Event Driven Architecture (EDA) to create an agile, enterprise ESB.
  • Project Open ESB implements an ESB runtime using Java Business Integration as the foundation. This allows easy integration of web services to create loosely coupled enterprise class composite applications.
  • Mule - Open Source ESB and Integration Platform. It is light-weight messaging framework that contains a distributable object broker for managing communication between applications.
  • BEA AquaLogic Service Bus is a carrier-class (commercial) ESB, available freely with a 5-user (developer) license.
